Hello again, sportsman and sportswomen. This is the time of year
when most outdoorsy people are in tree stands or flushing out dove.
Some of us die hard fisherman used to hunt also, but if I'm gonna
be outside and getting' cold it's gonna be with a fishin' pole
in my hand and running 75 mph across Lake TAlquin huntin' trophy
bucketmouths or slab specks. Some of you use four wheeler Kawasaki
Mules, but I prefer to run a Bascat Puma. To each his own I guess.
Well, for those of you who still prefer to fish here's what I've
been findin.
BASS FISHING: Still a few good fish on some ledges but not
many. Definitely creeks are the place to be. Creek channels are holding
lots of bait and lots of bass. Find the bait and you'll have no
problem catching them. We now have a secret spinner bait just for
this time of year, when you're fishing around those tiny shad.
As a matter of fact, I had only one left... until two weeks ago
when we (Todd Nedley and Ricky Atkinson) went to Lake Murray in
SC to fish the BFL regional. We spotted some in a bait shop and
started to grab all we could. Some of the other competitors that
were in there saw us and it became a free for all. Cleaned all
of them out. Only my closest friends, one sponsor and a few clients
from my guide trips know what they are. But let me tell you they
are HOT!!!! One of these days the secret will be out of the bag
and I'll be just a mere mortal again. Where was I????????? Oh ya,
find them around the pads early in the morning and late in the
afternoon. If there is a slight shop on the water you can catch
them all day on a buzzbait. Once the sun comes up I'm throwing
a big worm with small weight around the channel turns and the pads.
CRAPPIE FISHING: Start around Williams and work you way to Harvey.
Troll between 8-10' deep in the early and late hours, then drop
em' down to around 18-20' after 11:00am. Rotate colors throughout
the day for more success. Also try a double rig with one hal fly
and a curly tail about a foot up the line. I often catch two at
a time when I do that.
Shouldn't be long B4 the Stripes start to bite well again. Look
for them down at the dam end and watch for the birds. Top water
spooks, and cranks in shad pattern will catch em' if they come
up.
On a side note. Some people have been saying they are catching
lots of big specks below the dam in the river. I rarely fish down
there due to all the snags and I have a large boat. The good thing
is its out of the wind and you don’t have to go far from
the ramp at the hgwy 20 bridge.
Give me a couple more weeks to see what has changed and I'll let
you know.
For those of you looking to get into a local tournament trail next
year, Parkway Marine will be sponsoring a division exclusively
on Talquin and you can qualify to win a brand new 2009 Basscat
boat! Call or e-mail me for details. 850-567-8131
Good luck, good fishing and be safe.
